ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To discuss the surgical counting process as a responsibility of the multidisciplinary team for patient safety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an integrative review, in which eight studies were selected, in Portuguese and English, taken from the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Nursing Database (BDENF) and Virtual Health Library (BVS). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: From the present study, it was observed the scarcity of articles that attribute the responsibility for this checklist to the surgical team as a whole. There was also a lack of understanding about the importance of the checklist, causing some teams not to carry out this protocol. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: For the surgeries to occur safely, it is essential to carry out a harmonious, synchronized and systematized team work. From the scientific productions, it is observed that there are few publications regarding surgical instrumentation. In this sense, it is proposed that surgical instrumentation be part of undergraduate courses in the health area, so that undergraduates have knowledge of this area, as well as integrate the anesthetic-surgical act as team members and not just as observers.
