ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To reflect on the application of the Uncertainty in Illness Theory in the experience of nursing professionals diagnosed with COVID-19. METHODS: This is a reflective study with a qualitative approach, structured as a theoretical essay. RESULTS: The essay was organized into three sections. The first presented the Uncertainty in Illness Theory, highlighting its foundations, concepts, and assumptions formulated by Merle Mishel. The second discussed the repercussions of the pandemic in the nursing work environment, emphasizing the intensification of pre-existing issues such as work overload, occupational risks, and psychological distress. The third addressed the transition of professionals from the role of caregivers to subjects who also require care, evidenced by the increased morbidity and mortality rates, which enabled reflections on the process of coping with uncertainty. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The experience of “being cared for” revealed adaptation as a continuous process, in which suffering and fragility were transformed into an opportunity for re-signification. Exposure to uncertainty fostered identity reorganization and personal and collective growth, reaffirming uncertainty as an inherent component of life.
