ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and epidemiological profile of mothers of small-for-gestational-age newborns (SGA) in a referral maternity hospital in Piauí. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study conducted in a high-risk referral maternity hospital in Piauí. The sample consisted of 153 mothers and their SGA newborns, born between January and March 2019. Sociodemographic, clinical, obstetric, and birth data were collected from medical records and analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Most mothers were aged 16–35 years (86.93%), self-identified as mixed-race (69.28%), lived in a stable union (47.06%), and had up to a high school education. The majority (62.09%) attended fewer than eight prenatal consultations. The most frequent gestational complications were preeclampsia (43.14%) and urinary tract infection (38.56%). Hypertensive disease specific to pregnancy was the most reported pathology (9.15%). Cesarean section was the most common mode of delivery (83.01%). CONCLUSION: The clinical and epidemiological profile of mothers of SGA newborns in this institution is characterized by social vulnerabilities and high clinical complexity, with a high frequency of hypertensive syndromes and inadequate prenatal care, as evidenced by the low number of consultations.
