ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To analyze the care provided by nurses to pregnant women with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 undergoing cesarean section. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative study conducted in the surgical center of a public maternity hospital, involving 12 nurses. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide. Data processing was performed using the IRAMUTEQ software (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires), and the data were analyzed based on Bardin’s content analysis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results showed that nurses worked in a context marked by work overload, fear of infection, and professional insecurity, particularly among those with less professional experience. Despite these adversities, nurses demonstrated the ability to adapt and reorganize care practices in the obstetric surgical center, assuming a central role in maternal–fetal clinical surveillance, implementation of biosafety measures, and organization of care for pregnant women with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 undergoing cesarean section. The use of institutional protocols proved to be important for standardizing actions, reducing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and strengthening patient safety, although it posed challenges to maintaining humanized care. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Even in the face of the negative physical and emotional repercussions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses played a strategic role in ensuring maternal–fetal safety and continuity of obstetric surgical care. Future studies are recommended to further explore the role of nurses in the obstetric surgical center and to investigate strategies to reconcile biosafety and humanized care in public health emergency contexts.
