ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perception of the health status of people with Diabetes Mellitus in the city of Colinas, in the interior of the state of Maranhão. METHODS: Cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive research, through primary data collection, in person in Colinas - Maranhão in the UBS of the urban area, with type 1 and 2 diabetics, aged between 18 and 60 years. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science for Windows (SPSS), using the Chi-square and Fisher' s exact tests. RESULTS: Good perception of health status was classified by 51.6% of men; regular perception was reported, mostly, by women. Among the most reported problems, we have sleep (30.3%). Among those who reported an unsatisfactory perception of their health, the majority took prescribed oral medication (93.8%), maintained a healthy diet (98.9%), had an adequate weight (91.6%), exercised regularly (99.4%), did not smoke (97.2%), did not drink excessively (97.8%), avoided sugar (100%) and examined their feet regularly (75.8%). In addition, 47.8% (n = 85) of the patients with an unsatisfactory perception of their health reported vision problems. CONCLUSION: Most of the public perceived their health as good. However, it was identified that those who indicated an unsatisfactory self-perception followed the guidance of health professionals and underwent regular monitoring.
