ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To reflect on palliative care and its relationship with suffering and humanization in the dying process. METHODS: This is a thematic reflection study based on scientific articles available in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), accessed through the Virtual Health Library (VHL), and the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), accessed via the Public/Publisher MEDLINE (PubMed) platform, as well as technical documents such as the Palliative Care Manual of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (2023). The descriptors “palliative care,” “multiprofessional care,” and “humanization” were used, combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. No time frame was defined in order to understand the historical and conceptual evolution of the topic. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The findings indicated that palliative care, rooted in Cicely Saunders’ hospice movement, represents a paradigmatic shift in healthcare by prioritizing dignity and the relief of suffering in its multiple dimensions. Empathic communication, emotional and spiritual support, and interdisciplinary work were shown to be essential in promoting comprehensive and humanized care. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Palliative care integrates science, ethics, and compassion, reaffirming the right of every individual to live and die with dignity. Its effectiveness depends on the preparedness of healthcare teams and on valuing the human dimension of caregiving.
