ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To discuss the importance of the role of nursing in preventing infections in patients in the Intensive Care Unit. METHODS: A qualitative bibliographic review was carried out, using previously published materials, such as articles and monographs. The databases used were: Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online), VHL (Virtual Health Library), scientific journals, besides the Ministry of Health governmental websites from 2013 to 2022 and Ministry of Health files from 1998, as well as articles in Portuguese and English. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There is a prevalence of IRAS that affect more patients who are admitted to ICUs because they are more susceptible to complications during their stay in the hospital. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: ICU nurses must have a holistic view of patients regarding infection control, identifying possible factors that favor the proliferation of infections, in which they will develop an assistance plan to minimize these risks, especially in ICU patients.
