KEYWORDS: Psyllium. Diabetes Mellitus. Glycemia.
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To examine and synthesize pertinent and scientifically proven information about the benefits of using psyllium on the glycemic profile of people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a narrative review of the literature. Reliable databases were used applying the key words: “psyllium” OR “glycemia” OR “type 2 diabetes mellitus” OR “glycemic control”. The inclusion criteria were articles from 2015 to 2024, in Portuguese and English. Review articles, duplicates, those that differed from the proposed topic and those older than the last 9 years were excluded. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: It was observed that fasting insulin and TNF-α decreased significantly, as well as insulin sensitivity in the group of participants who received a moderate carbohydrate and low energy diet together with 7 grams of psyllium powder. Furthermore, in a randomized clinical trial with 60 type 2 diabetic people, the group that received 10.5g of psyllium showed a mean reduction in postprandial glucose by psyllium husk significant at 14.33 - 2.04 mmol/L. CONSIDERATIONS FINALS: In short, it was possible to point out the effectiveness of using psyllium in regulating the glycemic profile of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
