ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the main activities in oral health education for children carried out by dental professionals and academics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review was carried out in the SciELO library and in the LILACS database, using the descriptors “health education”, “dentistry” and “children” linked by the boolean operator AND. Scientific articles published between 2016 and 2020, available in English or Portuguese, and with free access on the respective research platforms, were considered. The works were selected through the provision of inclusion and exclusion criteria, being initially carried out the reading of the abstract of the same. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 42 articles were found (LILACS = 37, SciELO = 05), 35 of which were excluded because they did not meet the selection and eligibility criteria. Lastly, 07 articles were considered for the composition of the final analysis of this study. 42.8% of the articles indicated performing oral hygiene instructions in a conventional way, while 57.2% of the analyzed studies performed dialogic activities. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Although most of the preventive approaches identified by the study are in accordance with a participatory and transformative dialog, a large portion of the identified professionals still perform traditional activities with little practical effectiveness in the field of pediatric dentistry.
