ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To characterize the bags of blood retained by blood centers in a state in Northeast Brazil. METHODS: This is a descriptive study with an observational quantitative approach, carried out from 2014 to 2016. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Of 161,001 donations made in the period, 4.06% were discarded in 2014, 3.31% in 2015 and 3 .29% in 2016. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was the most frequent, with 45.5%, followed by Syphilis, with 36.65%, and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections with 5, 63%, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with 5.45%, Chagas disease with 3.56% and human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) with 2.74%. Single male individuals, aged between 26 and 40 years and with complete high school were the most seropositive. CONCLUSION: Identifying the number of unsuitable bags and the reasons that led to this unsuitability reveals the continuous and necessary reinforcement carried out by blood banks regarding the prevention of these agents with guidelines to the donor, as well as the evaluation of the effectiveness of existing programs and implementation of new ones aimed at the safety of the act of donating.
