ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To verify the importance of the Dental Surgeon as a member of the multiprofessional team in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). METHODS: This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative characteristic. For this, a bibliographic survey was carried out in the scientific databases PubMed and LILACS and in the Scielo platform, using the descriptors Intensive Care Units; Dental care; Oral Health; Dentists, with the help of the Boolean operator “and”, in addition to delimiting the research to systematic review studies in Portuguese, English and Spanish, between the years 2017 to 2022, in order to obtain a greater degree of evidence and updating. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 807 records were obtained and, after applying the inclusion criteria, resulted in 80 articles, among which only 19 were included. Patients hospitalized in intensive care units may have a significant reduction in oral health due to intubation and medication use, increasing the risk of respiratory infection and length of hospital treatment, in addition to directly affecting their quality of life.FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: It is concluded that the presence of the dentist in the multidisciplinary team is essential as it fully helps the patient' s health, favoring a better prognosis and recovery.
