ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To discuss the eating disorders anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) from a radical behaviorist perspective, relating them to the consequence selection model for a more effective understanding of these disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative literature review was carried out on how eating disorders are understood from the behavior selection model by consequences, being searched on the following platforms: Google Scholar; CAPES Periodicals; and Electronic Journals in Psychology (PePSIC). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The influence of phylogenetic, ontogenetic and cultural variables responsible for selecting and perpetuating the behavioral repertoires present in anorexic and bulimic individuals was observed. Recognizing them not as final symptoms, the result of the patient' s internal causes, but understanding that those are involved in a complex network that sustains them. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The analyses carried out through the perspective of behavior analysis highlight the importance of identifying the processes of installation, maintenance and repercussion of AN and BN in people' s lives throughout their history. In this way, it can be seen that these problems encompass not only the individual in particular, but the entire social context and philogenetic history.
