ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To identify the difficulties faced by health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an integrative literature review and was carried out in LILACS and PUBMED databases, using descriptors: Saúde Pública / Public Health / Salud Pública, COVID – 19 / COVID – 19 / COVID – 19, Profissionais da Saúde/ Health professional/ Profesionales de la salud. At the conclusion of the searches, 60 articles were selected for this review. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Among the adversities faced by health professionals during the pandemic, the high probabilities of infection are highlighted, making them a vulnerable group to the disease. Furthermore, there was an increase in the development of psychological disorders by this group of professionals during this pandemic period. Thus, the effectiveness in combating COVID-19 is directly related to the management of health levels and systemic integration of health actions and services. CONCLUSION: In view of this, the health emergency generated by COVID-19 caused major challenges for health professionals, including service overload, management of human and material resources, uncertainty about the effectiveness of treatments used and concerns about managing their own health, and that of their families and patients.
